Shaun’s Story
PSDS member Debbie shares this lovely update about her son Shaun…
Life is full of challenges, but for Shaun who is now 20, they are merely opportunities to grow and conquer. From a young age, Shaun has never let his disability define him or limit his ambitions. His journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, determination, and the unwavering belief that anything is possible.
Early Years: A Spirit of Determination
Even as a child, Shaun’s tenacity was evident. He would tackle every task with a fierce determination, whether it meant coming in last or taking longer to finish. The important thing was that he always finished. Shaun’s early years were marked by countless small victories that laid the foundation for the confident, independent young man he is today.
Embracing New Challenges
As Shaun transitioned into adulthood, he faced new challenges head-on. To him, these were not obstacles but exciting opportunities. His unwavering spirit and positive outlook have been key to his success. Whether it has been achieving his goals in academics, pursuing hobbies, or building meaningful relationships, Shaun has always given his best effort. He has gained valuable work experience at Waitrose, Wildlife Aid, and as a volunteer at YMCA Kids Club, charity shop and allotment. His adventurous spirt has let him to experience the thrill of tandem paragliding and has skydiving on his bucket list, which was postponed this year due to personal circumstances but remains a goal for the future.
A New Chapter: Supported Living
This September, Shaun embarked on a new adventure by moving in to Supported Living at his college. He now has his own studio flat, where he is responsible for keeping it clean and tidy and doing all his own cooking. While he receives support for cooking Shaun is able to cook his meals independently which for him is a great achievement. In just one term he has embraced this independence with enthusiasm, taking pride in cooking, washing up, managing his own space and making his own choices.
Looking Ahead: A Bright Future
Shaun’s experience in supported living is already having a positive impact on his life. The independence and responsibility he is gaining will undoubtedly shape his future in wonderful ways. We are incredibly grateful for this opportunity and the growth it is fostering in Shaun.
PSDS: Support and Socialising
Our family has been a member of PSDS since Shaun was about 4 years old. We’ve received incredible support from PSDS throughout Shaun’s childhood and now into adulthood. From dance and drama to youth club, family days out and summer BBQ’s and currently a youth communication group called 5Club are some of the wonderful activities and clubs that are available to us. Shaun has made great friends and developed wonderful social skills by participating in PSDS activities and clubs.
A Message To Other Parents
We hope by sharing Shaun’s story we can encourage other parents and individuals to believe that living an independent life is possible and can be a deeply rewarding journey, regardless of the challenges they may face. With the right support and a determined spirit our children can achieve incredible things.
Shaun’s journey so far is a testament to the power of perseverance, determination and the unwavering belief that anything is achievable.
