We meet monthly at Lloyd Hall in Outwood (click
for map and directions) to share information and experiences and for our children to socialise and have fun together. All family members are welcome to come along for a chat and check out the resources in our library. Our meetings are themed with special activities each month – all aimed at allowing children with Down syndrome to participate fully alongside their peers and siblings.
Pre-School Development Groups
We run weekly early development groups (digbies) for children with Down syndrome who are aged up to four years. Digbies stands for “developing individual growth by imaginative play, education and speech”. The weekly sessions are of great benefit not only to the children who take part but also parents who can experience first hand new ways to encourage and aid development in specific areas such as speech and language, early education and social interaction.
After School Activities
Children aged four and over can take part in our after school activities which include a weekly drama club and social events. These activities provide a stimulating and fun opportunity for our children to socialise with their friends who also have Down syndrome.
Speech and Language Therapy
We work very closely with a qualified Speech and Language Therapist who has specific experience of working with children with Down syndrome and our children benefit greatly from this. All children attending digbies receive weekly input from our Speech Therapist, and the older children receive monthly input during our family meetings.
Educational Programs
Family members and professionals can take advantage of our special educational days featuring guest speakers with extensive knowledge about Down syndrome. The educational days offer access to excellent speakers and interesting content at a very minimal cost.
Resources
We have an extensive library of resources including reference books and DVD’s, developmental aids and learning resources that can be borrowed at any time. The resource library is available at our monthly meetings or by emailing psds (committee@psds.info).
Social Events
Throughout the year psds organises a wide range of social events including a family fun day, a summer picnic and a Christmas party.
Fundraising
Raising funds is essential in order for psds to continue to provide its vital services. We actively organise events such as winetastings, fun days, sponsored events and raffles to raise funds for psds. Every penny helps children with Down syndrome to reach their full, wonderful potential. If you can help in any way please contact us on committee@psds.info .
